Death: The general area was saddened on Monday last 3rd August as the news spread of the death that morning of Mr Vincent Brady, Gurteen, Arva which occurred at Cavan General Hospital following a long illness. Vincent was a well known figure in the area and was regarded as a top class farmer. He was born into a family steeped in the GAA and when his time came he distinguished himself on the field of play. He was a member of the Moyne Community School team which won the Longford Vocational Schools Championship in 1976 and that same year he was a member of the Longford Vocational Schools team which contested the All Ireland Final against Galway. Vincent also played with Cavan County Minor and U 21 teams for a number of years. He gave sterling service to his club Arva and Captained them to Intermediate Championship success in 1983 a year they also won the Division 2 League. He never said too much but he led by example and the lads were always glad to be playing with him and not against him. He was “Teak Tough” and played mostly at Centre Half Forward but was equally at home at Centre Half Back and was one of those players who could play in any position on the field. Vincent got a bad leg break but true to form he was back in the Blue Jersey as soon as he was fit again. Unfortunately this was short lived as he suffered another brake which put an end to his career. He played for a number of years with Longford Rugby Club and here again he made a lasting impression where he was fearless in the tackle. He played both Gaelic and Rugby with Ballyhaise Agricultural College during his time there. After he retired from playing Vincent turned his hand to Team Management for a couple of years but despite his best efforts success eluded the team’s. His remains reposed at his residence on Tuesday evening and there was a constant stream of callers to pay their respects until removal to the Church of the Scared Heart, Arva on Wednesday evening. A large Guard of Honor accompanied the hearse on the final part of the journey made up of members of St Patrick’s Arva GAA Club, County Cavan Fine Gael, and Arva Agricultural Show Society. The Irish Flag was draped on his coffin as Vincent had been a member of the F.C.A. for some time and his Number 11 Arva jersey was also on the coffin. His remains were received into the church by Rev Donald Hannon C.C. Monsignor Bernard Noonan P.P. Moate (his Brother in Law) with a number of other priests also present. Monsignor Noonan was the Chief Celebrant of his Requiem Mass assisted by Fr Hannon with 12 other priests con celebrating while burial took place in Coronea Cemetery. The number of mourners attending both the removal and funeral were among the largest seen in the area and showed the esteem in which Vincent and his family are held. He is survived by his wife Lillian, sons Thomas, Ciaran, Bernard, daughter Deirdre, brothers Sean, Thomas, Brian, Brendan, Jim, sisters Margaret, Ann, nephews, nieces, cousins, brothers and sisters in law and a large circle of friends to all of whom we extend our sincere sympathy. Ní beidh a lethéid ann arís.
