Show: Arva Agricultural Show Society held their 58th Annual Show on Sunday last in the “Show Field” with the kind permission of M.s Philomena Fyfe. In what has to be one of the worst days ever encountered by the committee the rain never relented from early morning. The members and exhibitors who were involved with the livestock were absolutely “drowned” at the end of the showing classes. In fairness everybody took it in the right spirit and smiled through the rain. It was still a great success with many top class exhibits in the different sections. A new direction this year was a round of the National Outdoor Tug Of War Championships taking place during the Show. This attracted a great level of interest with the competition lasting over 4 hours with the competitors coming from all over Ireland. The Senior competition was won by Lakehill, Co Mayo with Boley, Co Wexford in 2nd place and Gortlettragh / Ballygar, Co Leitrim in 3rd place. There were teams from Tipperary, Wexford, Limerick, Cork, Offaly, Longford, Leitrim, Wicklow and Galway taking part in the various grades and all were reportedly happy at the end of the day. We hope to see them back in Arva next year. On behalf of the community we thank the committee and workers for all their efforts in keeping this great tradition alive over the years. We also thank the sponsors and the exhibitors with whom it would not be possible.
The Show Dance with Mike Denver was a sell-out in the Breffni Arms Hotel on the same night with everyone enjoying the brilliant music.
Minor’s: The Cavan Minor Team will play Kildare in the All Ireland Quarter Final this weekend with Finbar Mc Avinue representing Arva on the panel. At time of submitting these notes we are unsure which day the game will take place – it may be on Saturday evening or it may form part of a double header with the Kildare Senior Team who play Kerry also in the Quarter Finals. Many people feel that the Minors didn’t do themselves justice in the Ulster Final and we hope they can defeat what is a quality Kildare side. Best wishes to all involved.
