Minor’s: The Cavan Minor Team were defeated by Kildare in the All Ireland Quarter Final on Saturday evening last in Pairc Tailteann, Navan. Unfortunately they gave Kildare a big lead and although they fought back bravely they were unable to close the gap and were defeated by 2 points. We thank all involved for their efforts and our own Finbar Mc Avinue representing Arva on the panel.
Rosie Run: The Annual Fun / Run in aid of the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association was postponed due to a bereavement and will now take place in Lough Gowna on this Sunday 9th August at 1.30 pm. Registration will take place in the Community Centre from 11.30 am. If you have free time on Sunday go along and support a worthy cause.
Church Services: for the Arva Church of Ireland Parish Group – Sunday 2nd August Service of Favourite Hymns in Columbkille at 10.00 am and in Arva at 11.30 am. No other Services on this Sunday.
First Friday: The Sick and Housebound in the Arva and Coronea areas will be visited on this Friday 7th August at the usual times. If you have a family member or friend either at home or in hospital who would like a visit from the priest please contact the Parochial House.
Visitation: The annual Visitation and Blessing of Graves will take place in Coronea Cemetery on Sunday of next week – 16th August at 12 noon. All plot owners are asked to ensure that the final resting place of their loved ones is neat and tidy. Please don’t leave any litter lying around the cemetery.
Arva 3 Province Festival: The popular festival took place last week with all the usual events taking place. It started on Monday week last and finished on Bank Holiday Monday. One of the biggest events was be the Wet, Wild ‘N Wacky Raft Race which was held on Gartylough beside the Swimming Pool. This event on Thursday night involved making a Raft of whatever material one wished and paddling out and around a marker in the lake. There was a great atmosphere and everyone was out for a bit of craic. Niall Sheridan and Paul Mulligan were once again the winners. The Outdoor Cinema had to be moved indoors to the Breffni Arms Hotel due to the weather but the football Blitz went ahead in lovely weather. The 3 Province walk / run / cycle for Cancer Charities was the biggest ever with over 750 participants registered. The new routes were praised by many taking part with the 100 Km Cycle covering some lovely scenery through counties Cavan, Leitrim and Longford. On Sunday night the fabulous Bagatelle played the Breffni Arms Hotel as part of their last Irish Tour. The show was a tremendous success with the group receiving a standing ovation when they finished.
Sports Day: The 3 province Festival Committee cancelled the Sports Day on Monday last as a Mark of Respect following the death of Vincent Brady, Gurteen, Arva which occurred at Cavan General Hospital on Monday morning. We extend sincere sympathy to his wife Lillian and family – Obituary in next week’s notes.
Blood Donor’s: The mobile unit of the Irish Blood Transfusion Service will visit St Brigid’s Community Centre next week on Tuesday 11th and Wednesday 12th August from 4.30 pm to 8.00 pm each day. Please note the date’s and make a point of attending if you are one of the lucky who can donate. The life you save could be your own.
Sympathy: The area was saddened by the death of Mrs May Crossan, Fyhora, Moyne which occurred suddenly at her residence on Friday 17th July. A member of the popular Leddy family, Portanure, Lough Gowna – May was for many years the popular secretary in Keith’s Grocery and Hardware. Her pleasant personality endeared her to everyone who had reason to call into her office. Deepest sympathy is extended to her husband Peter, her mother Mary, brothers, sisters and extended family. Her remains were removed from Lakelands Funeral Home, Cavan to the Church of the Holy Family, Lough Gowna and following Requiem Mass burial took place in the adjoining cemetery.
Sympathy: is extended to Peter Brady, Corlisbratten, Arva on the death of his father Sean Brady, Gelsha, Ballinalee which occurred on Tuesday of last week in Laurel Lodge Nursing Home, Longford. His remains were removed to St Colmcilles Church, Aughnacliffe and following Requiem Mass burial took place in the adjoining cemetery.
