St Patrick’s Arva GAA Club: Lotto: The Arva Football Club Lotto draw was held in the Clubrooms on Tuesday last 12th July 2016. The Jackpot was €4,800. Numbers drawn – 3 / 4 / 6 / 29 – no winner. €50 winners – Conal Conneely, Bruce Manor. Brian Lynch, Tycusker. Seamus Lohan, Newbridge. The Jackpot on Tuesday night last 19th June 2016 was €4,850. Lotto Envelopes can be left in the Letterbox in St Patrick’s Hall next to the National School for collection prior to the draw. We appeal to Club Members and thee wider public to support the Lotto each week as the club are trying to raise funds for their new development and all support is much appreciated
League: Arva are due to play Lacken in the Kiernan’s Service Stations Division 1 League on this Sunday at 2 o’clock in Michael Cully Park. Supporters should check to ensure it is still going ahead at that time due to the Agricultural Show taking place across the road.
Golf Classic: St. Patrick’s Arva GAA Club Golf Classic was held on Friday last in County Cavan Golf Club and was a resounding success with 45 Teams taking part. Among those playing were current Mayo footballer Keith Higgins who was on the Bank of Ireland team, Joe Kiernan, former Armagh player and Team Manager and Gene Duffy former Armagh Chairman who were on Ollie (Texas) Brady’s team, Paddy Cullen former Dublin player and Team Manager was with Gerry Brady Snr, Dublin, Kevin Behan former Louth player who won an All Ireland in 1957 was with Hugh Hourican (Boars Head) Team. There were numerous current and former players and lots of players from neighbouring clubs. Everyone had a great day and enjoyed the golf. The presentation of prizes took place in the Breffni Arms Hotel that night and again it was well attended. Niall Brady, Club Chairman thanked the members of County Cavan Golf Club for their help and support on the day and in particular the Club Captain Mr Brendan Young who was present at the presentation. He also thanked Clearwater Catering for the beautiful food in the Golf Club. Niall thanked Brían Ellis, Conal Conneely, Cathal Brady and the rest of the committee for all their work in ensuring that everything was so successful. He thanked the Main Sponsors, associate Sponsors and all those who put in teams without their generosity it would not have been possible. Next year’s event is eagerly awaited.
Cavan: The Cavan Senior Team were defeated by Derry in Kingspan Breffni Park on Saturday last in the All Ireland Qualifiers and so ends their year. We thank them for their efforts on behalf of the county – a lot of sacrifices are made to play County Football and we should think of that before criticising them. It’s back to our own Leagues this weekend and next weekend with the Championship starting in 2 weeks time.
Hospital and Nursing Home Visit’s: Priests no longer have access to the list of patients in any hospital or healthcare facility so it is impossible for them to know that a parishioner is in a hospital or nursing home unless they are told. Please inform your local priest if you would like a family member to be visited in a hospital or nursing home.
Church Services: for the Arva Church of Ireland Parish Group – This Sunday 24th July – United Holy Communion and Baptism Service at 11.00 am in Carrigallen. No other services this weekend.
Visitation: The annual Visitation and Blessing of Graves will take place in Coronea Cemetery on Sunday 14th August at 12.15 pm. All Plot Owners are requested to ensure that the resting place of their loved one’s is clean and tidy for this day and please bring away all rubbish.

Church and Hall Meeting: A very important meeting and information night was held on Thursday night last regarding proposed works which have to be carried out on both the Church of the Sacred Heart, Arva and St Patrick’s Hall, Arva. There is ongoing problems with Damp in the Church which need to be rectified as soon as possible. An Architect was present to give his views and was appointed to deliver a report on the church. The Hall is in need of major refurbishment and the plans have already been approved. It is hoped that grant funding will be available for the Hall in the near future.
Arva Agricultural Show Society: will hold their 59th Annual Show on this Sunday 24th July. There are 18 Qualifiers and over 300 Classes from Horses, Cattle etc to Home Industries, Farm and Garden, Dog Show and the All Ireland Tug of War Finals and a large array of top quality Pedigree Animals on show. There are prizes also for the Most Appropriately Dressed Lady and Gent. Entries should be with the Secretary by yesterday Tuesday 19th July to ensure publication in the Catalogue. This year’s show promises to be a great one with Free Bouncy Castles for the Kids and loads to see and do. The committee are to be congratulated on keeping the Show going for so long and on that point we remember all the companies and individuals who offer financial sponsorship without which the Show could not take place. Always a great place to meet old friends and renew acquaintances with many people organising holidays to coincide with this annual event. Many former residents make the trip from overseas in order to meet old friends and get up to date on local happenings. The brilliant Robert Mizzell will cap off the day at the Show Dance in the Breffni Arms the same night, Doors 11pm. If anyone would like to get involved or help out on the day there is a Show Committee meeting this Thursday night in the Resource Centre, Market Square, Arva at 9.00 pm. Everyone welcome.
Arva 3 Province Festival: will take place between 24th July and 1st August. It will include Fun and Sport for young and old and the good news is that most of it is free. These events include the hugely popular Raft Race, a Nature Walk, Café Music, Outdoor Cinema, Underage and Overage Gaelic Football, Sports Day etc, etc. so make a note of the dates and come along and enjoy what Arva has to offer you naturally.

Breffni 3 Province Challenge: Planning for this year’s challenge is in full swing, with the aim of hitting our €1 million target for Cancer Care & Research. This year’s challenge brings you a new dimension aimed at local clubs, be it running, walking, fitness, GAA. The list is endless!! Our team event, brought to you by the Breffni Arms Hotel, Arva, allows teams of between 3 & 6 people to compete in the Half Marathon. The best three times will give you the win. But as an added twist; the best overall male and female will not be counted! As this is a huge event to organise, all help is much appreciated. If you are willing to volunteer a few hours in marshalling, catering or first aid please let us know. As usual this hugely popular event will be held on the August Bank Holiday weekend which will be Saturday 30th July.

TOM CLARKE at The Corn Mill: Tom Clarke was the first signatory of the 1916 proclamation and one of the main instigator of the 1916 rising. He was also a family man with a wife and three young children. His father was from Errew in Carrigallen. He was great friends with his fellow signatory and Kiltyclogher man Sean Mac Diarmada. The play “Tom Clarke’s One True Love’, written by Killian McGuinness and performed by the Corn Mill Theatre Group, dramatizes the life of Tom Clarke the public and private man. It is betimes heartbreakingly sad but peppered with comedy. Performances take place in The Corn Mill Theatre this Wednesday 20th, Thursday 21st, Friday 22nd, and next week Thursday 28th and Saturday 30th.
